Security risk assessment Holiday – Alwinco Newsletter 1124
We recently conducted an independent security risk assessment for a mining operation in Rustenburg, where we identified risks that are frequently overlooked by standard assessments. Our independent insight enabled us to recommend effective measures to protect personnel, equipment, and critical infrastructure while improving the overall security of the site.

Holiday Hijackings: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe
To stay safe, remain alert and avoid distractions like using your phone while driving. Change your routes and times to avoid predictability. Stick to busier, well-lit roads, and if you’re being followed, drive to a police station or a public area. At intersections, leave space to escape, and don’t stop for suspicious incidents or people. Keep your doors locked, windows up, and valuables hidden. Consider installing anti-hijacking devices like immobilizers, panic buttons, or tracking systems for added protection. If you find yourself in a hijacking situation, stay calm, comply with demands, and prioritize your safety over your vehicle. With careful planning and awareness, you can reduce the risk of hijacking and enjoy a safer holiday season.
Crime Never Takes a Break
During the festive season, crime rates tend to rise as criminals take advantage of the holiday chaos. Common threats include theft, online fraud, road hazards, and domestic violence. To protect yourself, be cautious of leaving packaging outside that advertises valuable items, and avoid falling for fake online deals or phishing scams. When driving at night, be aware of road spikes and the increased risk of drunk drivers—if you plan to drink, arrange alternate transportation. Domestic violence can also spike, so seek help immediately if you’re in an abusive situation.
Crowded public spaces can lead to fights or vandalism, so stay alert and avoid confrontations. If traveling, review your security system to ensure everything is functioning and secure your home before leaving. For families, ensure children and teens are supervised and use location tracking on their phones. Prepare a Security Risk Assessment for your home, or update it if you already have one, to ensure you’re proactively protecting yourself and your loved ones. Staying safe is all about planning and being aware.
Why Security Needs a Captain
A key lesson from years of experience as a Security Risk Assessor is that having the best security equipment is meaningless without a solid plan and proper management. To illustrate this, imagine a state-of-the-art jet sitting on the tarmac, but the pilot is a janitor holding a mop. Despite the jet’s advanced technology, you wouldn’t feel safe flying without the right pilot. Similarly, businesses often invest in high-tech security systems but fail to achieve their security goals due to poor planning and lack of coordination.
A Security Risk Assessment is essential—it’s like hiring an expert pilot. It ensures that each piece of security equipment works together as part of a strategic system designed to protect property, reduce crime, or safeguard employees. During the assessment, weaknesses and gaps are identified, helping to align technology, routines, and response strategies. Security is not just about buying equipment; it’s about having a comprehensive plan that makes the tools work together. Before investing in more gear, businesses should ask if they have the right people, processes, and planning in place. A well-coordinated strategy is what ensures security systems actually work, keeping you and your assets safe.
